On March 14, 2002 Gina, Rose and I drove out to Lubbock Texas to see OUR  Lady Jacks play the Texas Tech Lady Raiders in the NCAA Basketball Play-Offs. While there we were able to visit with some of our Cousins; First we stopped over in Slaton and visited with Juanita, her son Steve and his family then on Saturday we drove on over to Idalou to visit with Joy Laquita and May Beth. For some of you who are not familiar with all of your cousins; Juanita is the daughter of Uncle Floyd and aunt Grace, Joy Laquita is the daughter of Mae who is the Daughter of Uncle Louis and aunt Nora and May Beth is the daughter of Mazie and Berville Clark. Mazie is Mae's twin sister and daughter of Louis and Nora.

While visiting in the home of  Leonard and May Beth Rackley she showed us all the pictures around the walls of different family members of both she and Leonard and then she led us over to the mantle and pointing to a picture said; This is my "Pride and Joy". There before us was a picture of a young man about 39 years of age but it was not the picture of  a 39 year old man in the prime of life enjoying it to the fullest but rather a man fighting for his life with cancer, a man with almost the entire left side of his face gone, a man with his left eyelid sewn closed all because this dreaded desease continued to wreak havoc with his body.  May Beth told us of the long and courageous battle he had gone through then she pointed to a framed poem sitting beside his picture. The following is a copy of that poem. This is a poem that this young man had written to himself. The poem was written in October of 2001 and he passed from this life November 26, 2001.

Mark Rackley: Born June 20, 1962 Died Novembr 26, 2001
Son of Leonard and May Beth Rackley.

Don't ask HIM why.

As I move my hand to wipe away tears,
I wish I could wipe away all my troubles and fears.
I have a disease, some call it cancer,
I call it hell, without any answer.

It has messed up my life, my body and face,
and caused a lot of hurt no one can erase.
The pain in my head gets worse everyday,
But I ask my Father to take it away.

Take away the pain, the anger and doubt,
Replace it with your mercy, as I go another bout.
Don't ask HIM why, Just receive HIS grace,
He won't reveal His plan , but He will unveil HIS face.

Through HE sends to help you, through family and friends,
There you will know that HIS love never ends.
As you talk to HIM in your worried prayers,
HE will overflow you with HIS utmost care.

Don't pray a selfish prayer and expect all to be fine,
Just ask for HIS will, and have peace of mind.
Don't expect a miracle or your personal plan,
Just know that HE is there, gently holding your hand.

He'll be there beside you every step of the way
Wiping your tears as you earnestly pray.
Don't ask HIM why just receive HIS grace,
He won't reveal HIS plan, but HE will unveil HIS face.

We can pray for a cure that cancer be defeated,
That until that time it will not be repeated.
We can pray for the surgeons, doctors and nurses,
And the treatment that follows will attain its purpose.

Our family and friends need our prayers of hope,
Of strength and comfort, as they try to cope.
It may not be HIS plan for this to strike you
But the body of Christ can shine on through.

The toll of your body may be hard and weakened
But your spirit, if allowed, will rightly be strengthened.
Don't ask HIM why, just receive his grace
HE won't reveal his plan, but he will unveil HIS face.

Cancer is not contagious, but your spirit will be,
To smile and to laugh is excellent therapy.
To have faith and hope that cannot be ignored,
To let other people know that it came from Our LORD.

In the midst of your struggle, continue to help others
Treating each person like a sister or brother.
Our Father will give you that strength in a crisis,
As you ask and receive, you grow in his likeness.

So pray for his strength, His courage and mercy
And continue your battle for the world to see.
Don't ask HIM why, Just receive HIS grace
He won't reveal HIS plan, but HE will unveil HIS face.
